Gospel band on fire to play

Supporting the work of high school chaplains at Merredin, Mt Barker and Governor Stirling Senior High School in Midland last year was local band Joel Smoker and the Gospel Firebrands, performing to enthusiastic audiences with a number of charity performances.

Three of their benefit concerts were in support of school chaplains and another concert, performed at the Eastern Hills Senior High School, was in support of the 25th Anniversary of the Hills Community Support Group providing services to youth at risk, the elderly, people with disabilities and carers.

Titled Big Sing 2008, concerts performed in Merredin and Mt Barker included a repertoire of well known favourites including Amazing Grace, He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands and All Night, All Day.

“We held a singing workshop in Merredin where locals were coached in four of the songs in our line-up,” guitarist and lead singer Joel Smoker said. “They then joined us on stage to perform what they had learnt – it worked really well.”

“This year we are interested in performing for any group that is raising funds for a suitable cause or charity and at this stage require only that our costs are met.”
“We also perform songs from my own original albums including The Flesh and the Spirit, Smile and my latest offering Heaven.”

The band’s line-up includes bass guitarist Paul Eatwell, Lesley Radloff on vocals and tambourine, Noelle Penn on vocals and hand held percussion and Joel Smoker on vocals and guitar. All attend Parkerville Baptist Church.

Ellenbrook on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th of March. There are forty images in this series and a number of photographs from the series will be on exhibition at the book launch.
